🥔 Potatoes farming in Zimbabwe
High-input, high-return tuber crop with year-round demand. Zimbabwe treats potato as a strategic food crop — seed quality and blight control decide your profit.

- Season / planting window
- Main crop Feb – Apr (winter crop, harvest Jun – Aug); summer crop Oct – Dec in cooler high-veld areas.
- Best regions
- Best in Natural Regions I and II — Nyanga, Mutare highlands, Marondera, Harare, Chinhoyi, Gweru. Avoid hot low-veld.
- Spacing / population
- 90 cm rows x 25–30 cm in-row on ridges ≈ 40 000 plants/ha; 2.0–2.5 t/ha certified seed tubers.
- Expected yield
- 20–30 t/ha smallholder; 35–50 t/ha commercial irrigated with certified seed.
Stage by stage
Seed selection & sourcing
6 – 8 weeks before planting
- Buy certified seed only (Agriseeds, Seed Potato Co-op or registered growers) — uncertified seed carries bacterial wilt and leaf roll virus.
- Choose variety by market: Amethyst and BP1 for general/chips, Mondial and Diamond for table and export, Garnet for early harvest.
- Grade seed to 45–60 mm tubers; keep in a cool, ventilated, diffused-light store.
- Allow sprouting (chitting) until sprouts are 5–10 mm — never plant blind tubers.
Fertiliser and chemicals
- FertiliserCompound S (or potato blend 7:14:7)
800–1 000 kg/ha · Banded at planting
Potato is a heavy feeder — do not skimp on basal.
- FertiliserAmmonium nitrate
300–400 kg/ha split in two · 3 and 6 weeks after emergence
Field tip
Certified seed is 40–50% of your budget but it is where the yield comes from — cheap seed is the fastest way to lose a potato crop.
