🐟 Aquaculture — Tilapia farming in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe's leading farmed fish. Fast growing, tolerant of warm shallow water, and sold live or fresh at a strong price.

- Season / planting window
- Stock Sep – Nov so the grow-out runs through the warm months; growth stalls below 20 °C in winter.
- Best regions
- Anywhere with reliable water — Kariba cage farms, Mashonaland dams and boreholes, lowveld ponds. Avoid cold highveld winters without greenhouse cover.
- Spacing / population
- Earth pond: 3–5 fish/m². Lined/tank system: 20–50 fish/m³ with aeration. Cages: 50–150 fish/m³.
- Expected yield
- 3–8 t/ha per cycle in well-managed ponds; 250–400 g market fish in 6–8 months.
Stage by stage
Site, water & permits
Before you dig
- Confirm year-round water: borehole, dam, weir or river abstraction — a fish farm cannot run dry for even a day.
- Get ZINWA water abstraction rights and register with the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Services; an EMA certificate is required for larger units.
- Test water: temperature 26–30 °C ideal, pH 6.5–8.5, dissolved oxygen above 4 mg/L.
- Choose clay-loam soils that hold water; sandy sites need liners.
Fertiliser and chemicals
- FertiliserAgricultural lime (pond bottom)
1 000–2 000 kg/ha · Dry pond, 2 weeks before filling
Raises pH and alkalinity, hardens the bottom and kills pathogens.
- FertiliserChicken or cattle manure (organic pond fertiliser)
500–1 000 kg/ha then 200 kg/ha weekly · Before stocking and during grow-out
Grows the plankton bloom that feeds fish naturally and cuts pellet cost.
Field tip
Buy only certified all-male (sex-reversed) fingerlings. Mixed-sex tilapia will breed in the pond and you will harvest thousands of tiny, unsellable fish.
