🍉 Watermelon farming in Zimbabwe
High-value, quick-return summer crop with strong urban demand; needs heat, space and clean water.

- Season / planting window
- Aug – Jan under irrigation; main dryland crop planted with the rains in Nov – Dec.
- Best regions
- Does well in the hotter lowveld and middleveld — Chiredzi, Mutoko, Muzarabani, Gokwe, Mazowe under irrigation.
- Spacing / population
- 2 m between rows x 1 m in-row (≈ 5 000 plants/ha); wider on vigorous open-pollinated types.
- Expected yield
- 25–45 t/ha with good management; 15 t/ha typical smallholder dryland.
Stage by stage
Variety & seed
3 – 4 weeks before planting
- Choose F1 hybrids (Sugar Baby, Crimson Sweet, Charleston Grey, Julie F1) for uniform fruit and market acceptance.
- Budget 1.5–3 kg seed/ha depending on spacing.
- Treat seed with a thiram- or metalaxyl-based dressing against damping off.
Fertiliser and chemicals
- FertiliserCompound S or C basal (7:21:7 / 5:15:12)
400–600 kg/ha · In the planting furrow at planting
- FertiliserAmmonium nitrate (34.5% N)
150–250 kg/ha split in 2 · Vine-run and early fruit set
Excess nitrogen late gives big vines and poor, tasteless fruit.
Field tip
Never plant watermelon after pumpkins, cucumber or butternut — rotate at least 3 years to break fusarium wilt and anthracnose.
